Obtaining a Permit

You can obtain a permit at any DMV location in the state.  To successfully obtain your permit you must take and pass a vision test and a knowledge test that they will administer (the test is multiple choice, usually done on a computer screen).

This will be the ONLY written test you will take prior to getting your license.  Many students find it helpful to start their classroom education at High Ridge Driving School prior to attempting to take this test.
What Documents You Need to Bring With You to Apply for Your Permit

1.  You Must Provide Proof of Name & Birth - this can be accomplished by providing two (2) forms of identification from the list below.  Note - one form of identification must be from the primary list.

Note: You CAN NOT use a student/School  I.D.
2. You must also bring a proof of residence.  A delivered piece of mail, magazine, postcard  sent to the student at their home will be suitable.  Be sure that the letter provides a clear and recent postmark, click here for an example.

We provide the information below to help simplify the process of obtaining a permit.  Please check the DMV's web site to ensure there are not any changes or additional documents needed.
To study for the test you should use the CT Driver's Manual (Click Here for a copy).   In addition to passing the vision and general knowledge tests you must bring the proper documents.
