Drive Only License
As Stamford’s largest school, we are uniquely qualified to help people obtain a Connecticut Drive Only license.
You must be at least 16-years old to be eligible for a Connecticut driver’s license, even if you currently hold a license elsewhere. This program is for Connecticut residents who can not establish legal residency(undocumented residents) in the U.S., and undocumented residents who do not have a Social Security number.
If you are a U.S. citizen, a documented immigrant (you are a current citizen with Immigration Services documents) or a holder of a current, unexpired B-1 or B-2 visa (for business or tourist reasons) this is NOT the correct program for you.
To obtain a Connecticut Drive Only driver’s license you must successfully complete 3 tests (Vision, Knowledge & On-road) and provide proper identification.
Steps to Take
Please review this Real ID Checklist to ensure you have the proper documentation necessary to apply for a Drive Only License. Be aware, the state does NOT accept foreign birth certificates as a form of identification.
If your documents are not in English, you must have them translated by a state-approved translator. We work with one, and we can assist you in getting your documents translated. You will not be able to obtain a drive only license if your documents are not properly translated! We can translate your documents!
Study for the knowledge test. You might want to consider buying our study guide which takes all the information that could be on the test, puts the information in a 4-part multiple choice question and answer format.
Make you appointment for the knowledge and vision tests, it must be done on-line, click here. You must schedule your test date/time for this test using the state’s website. The state does not offer walk-in testing. There is a written Knowledge test for the learnerэs permit (you must answer 20 of the 25 questions correctly to pass the test), and that test is available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian. Contact the CT DMV directly if you have a drive-only license from another state.
Sign an affidavit when you schedule your test indicating that you will file for legal immigration status when it is available to you.
When you attend your test date, be sure to bring all required documents. Note, you will be required to pass a background check relating to criminal and CT driving records.
When you have passed your vision and knowledge tests, plus the background check, your CT learner’s permit will be mailed to you.
Connecticut Drive Only students will need to obtain a learner’s permit.
